Dental insurance
Dental Insurance is insurance that pays for the cost of dental care procedures. It comes in handy when unexpected dental issues come up, requiring immediate and costly surgery and/or procedure. Most people do not have the needed cash on hand to pay for such procedures. This explains why dental insurance is widely held. 57 percent of Americans have some sort of Dental Insurance coverage. 96 percent of these people recieve their dental insurance from their employer. The remaining 4 percent get their dental insurance from other means.
Types of dental insurance policies
There are two types of Dental Insurance: Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) and Dental Health Maintenance Organization (DHMO). These are both considered managed care providers, each with their own set of pros and cons. PPO dental insurance plans leave the patient with a co-pay. Co-payments are usually fixed per procedure.
Dental Health Maintenance Organization dental insurance plans work in a way that they basically tell you which dentists you can go to. This may be cheaper than a Preferred Provider Organization, but it may cause you to recieve dental care that does not meet the expectations established by the plan. These pros and cons makes both types equal in most respects.
Many dentists do not agree with the terms of dental insurance policies. Looking out for their own interests, they feel the industry forces them to fill out more paperwork and recieve less pay. Despite this, dental insurance is not about the dentists. It is about the everyday people who count on it in case of severe dental emergencies. Adequate coverage, however, is paramount in getting a good deal on dental care. A shoddy Dental Insurance plan will not allow you to reap the full benefits that a premiere provider will provide.
A dental discount plan is an non-insurance dental plan that provides discounted dental care for patients. Members of these plans recieve 30 to 35 percent discounts on dental care and procedures. However, likes a Dental Health Maintenance Organization plan, the plan tells you which dentist to get dental care. This, like DHMO, may lead to a tradeoff of quality for cash savings.
Dental discount plans also have reputations as being more shady than dental insurance providers; therefore all dental discount plans should be checked out top and bottom before sign-up. The lack of regulation of these organization may set up a potential member to get taken advantaged of by a dishonest organization.
Like other insurance companies, dental insurance companies and organizations are regulated by state insurance commissions. These commisions make sure that insurers are honest in their disclosure of dental insurance terms, that the insurer is solvent and able to pay out claims; and that the insurance company is regulated to do business in the state. When looking into dental insurance, an extensive investigation into the company or organization's filings with the state insurance commission should be administered. All states have insurance commissions, and all state have websites where individuals can look up specific insurers to check out their legitimacy.
National association of dental plans
The National Association of Dental Plans (NADP), according to its offical statements online, is the largest non-profit, national trade association focused exclusively on the dental benefits industry.
