Travel insurance

Travel insurance allows you to insure yourself against whatever might happen during a trip. This type of insurance policy is purchased to cover anyone who intends to travel for long or short periods of time, locally or internationally and for different purposes. While away from home on a trip and you find that you are in some sort of financial difficulty due to injury or loss, knowing you have travel insurance will put you at ease.

Types of Travel Insurance

Such policies are intended to cover expenses related to loss due to having to cancel the trip, delays, baggage loss or delay, medical expenses, legal expenses, medical emergencies, accidental death or injury and other possible misgivings. There are different types of policies for different types of travelers and they are usually quite flexible in who, what and how they will cover you.

The right type of travel insurance for you depends upon who you are, what your needs are and what type of trip you are planning to take. All types of travelers can be covered, such as leisure travelers, business travelers and student travelers. Policies cover the individual, the family and travel partners. There are also special policies for those going on a cruise or just for flying.

Many companies will allow you to choose different coverage options or to add extra clauses into existing policies to get just the right insurance for you. Some providers will even offer special policies that provide coverage for circumstances such as pre-existing medical conditions or travel to high risk countries during war or natural disasters. These policies are usually very limited on what they cover and under which circumstances, but you will find that such policies exist. Pregnancy should be discussed with the travel insurance provider and you will usually be covered through the first 3 months of pregnancy. Some companies may provide for coverage longer than that.

Things to know and consider

Most travel insurance is purchased as a temporary insurance and can easily be arranged by your local travel agent or by contacting one of the many companies that provide travel insurance. These companies are usually not affiliated with big name life or health insurance companies but tend to be on their own offering a specialized service for travelers.

When of thinking purchasing insurance read the fine print and know that there are rules. Most companies will require that the insurance is purchased within a short period immediately following your purchase of tickets, hotels and services or at the time of booking. Missing this deadline may leave you unable to purchase travel insurance at all. You can expect short term travel insurance to run about 5% of the trip cost. You should note the deductibles and the exclusions but it does make a lot of sense to have a policy when you travel.

You can only purchase travel insurance from an agent or travel insurance company that is in the country you reside in. For example if you are an American Citizen and plan to travel to Europe, you must purchase from an agent or company within the United States. Long term or continuous travel insurance can also be purchased from companies and will be a little more expensive with policies that will vary.

Benefits & Services

You can expect emergency service which is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. If you have an emergency there will be someone available to contact on the company hot line.
Most policies will offer options such as the option to cancel at any time for any reason; this is usually at an extra charge but worth it if you must cancel at the last minute. Travel insurance companies will help you find a certified travel agent if you need one and offer concierge services to assist you during your trip for things like dinner reservations and attending events.
